Lexus Files for RX350L Trademark, Hinting at Seven-Seater Model

An application for a Lexus RX350L trademark has appeared in Europe.

Typically, adding the letter “L” to a nameplate means it’s a long-wheelbase variant, and Lexus uses it on the LS600h L model, which is a long-wheelbase hybrid variant of the LS flagship sedan. Based on that, it appears the Lexus RX350L will be a three-row RX crossover, which has been spied testing and rumored for quite some time now.

The popular crossover has lacked a third-row option, meaning it can’t compete with other larger SUVs or crossovers like the Infiniti QX60. Lexus hopes to resolve that issue by adding a longer variant to accommodate the extra row of seats.

The application for the trademark was filed with the European Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market on March 11, 2016 and is classified for “Automobiles and structural parts thereof.” With the all-new 2016 Lexus RX now available, expect the seven-seater variant with three rows to make its debut sometime this year before it goes on sale as a 2017 model.

Update 03/16/2016: Trademark applications for both RX350L and RX450hL have also been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
