Spy photographers have caught the next-generation BMW X4 getting ready to hit the road.

The new BMW X4 has been spied on a trailer along with other BMW and MINI prototypes, and it’s not wearing a whole lot of camouflage. Since the X4 is based on the X3, it makes sense that the level of camouflage is similar to the X3 that photographers have caught testing. It also means the next-generation X4 will likely need less time for testing. Look for both models to share powertrains and for both to be lighter compared to the current models thanks to their new platform.

Rumor has it that BMW is planning an X3 M model for the next-generation entry, powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine offering around 500 horsepower. It would only make sense for BMW to give the X4 the same treatment, since it’s supposed to be the sportier of the two models. A plug-in hybrid variant is also expected for both SUVs.

It’s possible both models will debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show later this year in September, although the X4 could be saved for a later show.
