Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has announced a recall for various Ram pickup trucks.

Approximately 1.8 million Ram pickup trucks from model years 2009 to 2017 are affected by the recall, although it’s unclear exactly which models are impacted. According to Automotive News, the recall is to fix a function that prevents occupants from inadvertently moving the shifter out of the “park” position. Affected units have their shifters mounted in the steering column, and Ram says the recall does not apply to vehicles with rotary dial or floor-mounted shifters. It also does not affect 2017 model year trucks built after December 31, 2016.

As of now, the American automaker is aware of seven potentially related injuries and a small number of potentially related accidents.

The issue was discovered after a review of field data revealed that the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) may not function properly if subject to specific high-temperature conditions for prolonged periods, FCA explained in a statement. “If BTSI becomes disabled, a vehicle’s shifter may be moved out of park without brake-pedal application, or the presence of a key in the ignition.”

Approximately 1.48 million vehicles are affected in the U.S., with another 249,520 units in Canada.

FCA confirms it will restore BTSI function in the vehicles subject to the recall and recommends customers to use their parking brakes.
