BMW is getting ready for the future Mercedes A-Class Sedan with its own 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The compact luxury sedan has been spied testing in the Arctic Circle, using plenty of snow as camouflage in the rear. Expected to debut before the end of the year, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will ride on a front-wheel-drive platform, similar to the Mercedes CLA. BMW will, however, like Mercedes, offer all-wheel-drive variants. Underpinning the 2 Series Gran Coupe is the UKL2 architecture, which can also be found on several MINI models, the BMW 2 Series Active and Gran Tourer models, the 1 Series Sedan, and the compact X1 and X2 crossovers.

Look for power to come from a range of three- and four-cylinder engines, but don’t expect a true M version. BMW is likely to offer an M Performance model, however, for those looking for a bit more performance and a sportier driving experience. Our spy photographers point out if you look closely at the brake calipers on this prototype, they are finished in blue, suggesting this could be the M Performance model testing.
