Mercedes-Benz has officially begun real-world testing of the AMG Project One hypercar.

The Formula 1 derived Project One’s chassis and aero development began with virtual performance tests using computer software. Meanwhile, engineers within Mercedes’ High Performance Powertrain division (HPP) were working on making the Mercedes-AMG Petronas’ Formula 1 team’s 1.6-liter turbocharged F1 engine suitable for road use. Now, after hundreds of hours of development, the automaker has produced the first real-world test prototypes for the Project One and put them on the track.

Photos of the first Project One prototype undergoing tests at a secret location in England show a camouflaged prototype that looks nearly identical to the Project One concept. With the release of these photos, we know the Project One will retain its roof-mounted snorkel intake, along with the radical-looking rear stabilizer fin, deployable rear wing and huge single exhaust tip.

The AMG Project One is will make just over 1,000 hp from its 1.6-liter turbocharged F1 engine and four electric motors. The engine is good for 748 hp and will rev all the way to 11,000 RPM, while the hybrid system will make around 272 hp. The vehicle also features F1-derived MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit-Heat) and MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic) systems for charging the battery on the move. An MGU-H recovers electric energy through engine heat, while an MGU-K recovers it through kinetic energy under braking. The vehicle will also weigh less than 2,900 lbs and will boast a top speed in excess of 220 mph.

First deliveries of the AMG Project One will commence in late 2019 at the earliest. Mercedes-AMG has a very large presence at this years Paris Motor Show, so don’t be surprised if more information on the Project One is revealed during the event.
