2024 Jeep Wrangler Refines an Icon: More Capable Base Models, Improved Tech and Comfort

Jeep pumps up the base Wrangler model, adds a lower-priced 4xe, and infuses the whole lineup with more tech.

Jeep at the New York International Auto Show has shown off a revised version of its iconic Wrangler. The 2024 Jeep Wrangler doesn’t mess with the formula, instead subtly altering the off-roader formula with even broader appeal to stay fighting fit against the reborn Ford Bronco.

First, the broader improvements. The seven-slot grille comes in for a rhinoplasty, with more recessed sections and a high-contrast coat of black paint. Jeep has introduced 10 new wheel designs, as well. Inside, every Wrangler now features a 12.3-inch touchscreen running Uconnect 5, plus standard side curtain airbags in the first and second rows.

Next are the more specialized updates: depending on trim, the Wrangler now offers a 5,000-pound towing capacity, an available-from-the-factory 8,000-pound Warn winch (possible thanks to the reprofiled grille), a 100:1 crawl ratio, and its first full-float Dana rear axle on Rubicon models.

Jeep’s plug-in Wrangler 4xe will gain the available Power Box, which includes four 120-volt outlets and 30 amps of total output.

There are no major changes under the hood, with the Wrangler still offering four different engines, two transmissions, and four 4×4 systems. The venerable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is standard, with the 2.0-liter turbo-four continuing on either on its own, or augmented with electric motors as part of the 4xe drivetrain. The raucous 6.4-liter Hemi V8 and its side-exit exhausts sits atop the pile in the Rubicon 392.

At the bottom of the trim walk, the Willys sees an off-roading upgrade with a standard rear locker and steel rock rails. It also gets the trailer tow and heavy duty electrical group both as standard now, plus 33-inch tires.

Jeep will broaden the offerings with two new trims for 2024. On the plug-in side, the new Sport S 4xe brings the entry sticker of America’s best-selling PHEV down. The Sport S includes full-range adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, remote keyless entry, a premium soft-top, 20-inch aluminum alloys, and a Gorilla Glass windshield.

On the other end of the spectrum is the Rubicon X trim, available in both gas and PHEV flavors. The X gon give ya native navigation, Nappa leather seats, Rock-Trac full-time transfer case, integrated off-road camera, and steel bumpers. Buyers will also find 12-way power-adjustable seats; Jeep says these have been specifically tested to handle the Wrangler’s 34 inches of water fording capability.

Downloaded right into the Uconnect 5 system and displayed on the new 12.3-inch high-resolution screen, Trails Offroad offers detailed trail guides for the 62 Jeep(R) Badge of Honor trails, which include Hell's Revenge in Utah.

Coming on-stream a little after launch will be a new infotainment feature called Trails Offroad. As standard, Trails Offroad will offer owners detailed trail guides for over 60 Jeep Badge of Honor trails. The guides include difficulty ratings, key waypoints, and a detailed route description—like a museum guided tour, but with more mudding. A premium subscription boosts the available trail guides to over 3,000.
