When Volvo announced that it would spin Polestar off into its own sub-brand, the Volvo faithful worried that it might mean no more Polestar versions of Volvos. Fortunately, Volvo has cleverly, if somewhat confusingly, sidestepped that problem by changing the name of its hotter cars to “Polestar Engineered.”

With the might of Volvo’s safety center behind it, it was always a safe bet that the Polestar 1 would be a safety leader. But Volvo, for all its leadership in safety tech, has never had to test cars made primarily of carbon fiber before.

Volvo has spent lots of money and four years rebuilding its lineup. And despite being lauded for its cars’ undeniable style, remarkable quality, and sumptuous luxury, Volvo’s focus was clearly not on driving dynamics. And why should it have been?

As Polestar moves forward with its business plan and pushes the idea of a subscription model, the question of what becomes of a used car becomes ever more important.

After showing off its first creation to interested buyers for a few months, Polestar is finally revealing more of its plan for how it will navigate the automotive space. And with nearly 200 deposits for the Polestar 1 coming from America alone — the market that has shown the most interest — you can be sure they’re focused on capturing the American market.

Following the debut of the Polestar 1 hybrid sport coupe, Volvo Cars’ latest brand, Polestar, has dropped details on its second model.

For the first time, the Polestar division will showcase the Polestar 1’s capabilities.

Polestar’s new home will be on the same campus as the main Volvo Cars head offices and factory in Torslanda, Sweden.

When it finally hits showrooms (as it were) Polestar’s new halo performance coupe, the 1, will first launch in the US, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and, of course, Sweden.

Thed Bjork and the fellas over at Polestar were officially declared the champions of the FIA World Touring Car Championship last week, and they’re pretty happy about it.

Volvo’s Polestar sub-brand broke ground on its new state-of-the-art Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China today. 

The official word is the Polestar 1 will only be available through the Care by Volvo subscription program. But like everything else in this world, Polestar won’t turn away cold hard cash.

Volvo and parent company Geely have announced an investment of $756 million USD in the newly repositioned Polestar electric vehicle brand.
