The Volvo EX30 Might Just Revolutionize The EV Market

Volvo’s EX30 might be the best deal in EVs yet.

For as premium as Volvo’s aspirations are, its latest EV comes with a decidedly un-premium price – the most basic EX30 will start at $34,950, not including the $1,250 destination fee, for the single-motor extended range base Core trim. The topmost dual-motor, Ultra trim will sticker for $46,600. That’s absurdly competitive for the EV market, where high prices seem to be the norm and there’s no movement to bring them downward. These prices just might change the EV game, especially for Volvo.

The EX30’s allure goes beyond its reasonable price tag. The car offers a competitive range for the price, meaning drivers aren’t buying a basic car with no utility. At 275 miles, (from 64 kWh of battery), there are definitely other EVs on the market that best the EX30, but that likely doesn’t matter. The EX30 is likely the cheapest way to get this many miles; The Kia Niro and Nissan Leaf are both more expensive and don’t go as far. The Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV are cheaper, but they’re about to be discontinued and i t’s not clear when (or if) they’ll come back to the market. Even the newly introduced Tesla Model Y RWD is around $8,000 more expensive than the single-motor RWD EX30.

That means Volvo’s kind of sitting alone in the market here. This premium brand has created a long-range EV, in a popular small crossover form factor. It’s the cheapest vehicle Volvo sells, regardless of powertrain and it seems to be just the right vehicle to satisfy all those in search of a reasonably priced EV. Remember, the Chevrolet Bolt twins actually increased their sales numbers despite GM announcing that it intended to cancel the two. The huge price cuts in late 2021 were some of the biggest drivers of Bolt EV and EUV sales. So, people really want to buy cheap EVs.

Volvo’s seemingly succeeded in bringing a cheap EV to the market. If sales take off, and they likely will, it could spur other manufacturers to get their own cheap EVs on sale.
