With news of a 9-2 model in the works for Saab, the Swedish automaker looks to expand its product offering further by launching a competitor to the Audi TT. The team at AutoExpress recently sat down with new Saab design boss Jason Castriota, who revealed the plans for the Swedish sports car, taking inspiration from the 1970s Sonett.

“I’ve looked at a retake of the Sonett, as Audi did with the TT, and I didn’t have to push the management too hard to justify it,” said Castriota. But even at a fast pace, a concept version of the car wouldn’t likely debut for at least two years.

Before then we should get an idea of where the Sonett and all other Saabs are head, design-wise. Castriota is currently penning a design concept for the Swedish automaker that will inspire future products. His creation could debut as early as the Geneva Auto Show this coming March and has been described as having a “jet on the road aesthetic.”

One of the first vehicles to get the new Saab styling direction will be the next-gen 9-3, which Castriota hints will be a significant departure from the current car. With the 9-3, we need something bolder. You can’t go into a knife fight with a wooden spoon,” he said.
