1971 Indy 500 Special Goes Under the Hammer

On May 21st, Mecum Auctions will be hosting its Original Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis and a star attraction will be a Foyt Coyote Ford racer, the car that NASCAR legend Donnie Allison ran at the 58th Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, May 29th 1971.

The car finished the race in sixth place that year, behind Bill Vukovich Jr. Foyt, driving another Coyote finished third, having qualified second behind eventual race winner Al Unser. Finishing second in the race was Peter Revson. This was also the same race where Eldon Palmer, driving the Dodge Challenger Pace Car, crashed at the end of pit row in spectacular fashion (see the video below).
