Filmmakers Buy Million Dollar Duesenbergs for Great Gatsby Flick Staring Leonardo DiCaprio
It’s a staple of high school English programs and now ‘The Great Gatsby’ is moving to the big screen… again. According to TMZ, filming of a new Gatzby flick is about to begin in Australia, staring none other than Leonardo DiCaprio (who else?).
A period movie needs the right props and for this flick filmmakers aren’t sparing any expense, reportedly purchasing two 1929 Duesenbergs and a 1929 Packard from the Volo Auto Museum in Illinois. If you’re not familiar with classic cars from this era, Duesenbergs were the cream of the crop and the prices paid for the vehicles reflect that, with a Volo spokesperson stating the value of each vehicle at somewhere between $800 and $3 million. Yup, each!
In the novel, there’s important symbolism behind the fact that Gatsby drives an ostentatious yellow car, so one has to think one of these pricey autos could get a banana hue. After all, that’s what happened to the 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom used in the 1974 version of the movie.
