Porsche Planning New Sports Car Between GT2 RS and 918 Spyder
Porsche is looking to develop a new high-end sports car that will slot in between the highest-performance 911 model, the GT2 RS, and the upcoming 918 supercar. This isn’t the first news of new exotic from Porsche, but it is the most reliable, with the source being Porsche’s global sales boss Bernhard Maier.
Maier spoke about the product expansion, which could also include new Cayman and Boxster variants, as well as an extended wheelbase and even a convertible Panamera, while discussing the German sports car maker’s plans to help bolster sales. Porsche hasn’t exactly had any problems moving cars off dealer lots, but after record sales in 2010, a larger plan is needed to meet a target of 200,000 sales (nearly double the current tally) by 2018. While a new high-performance machine won’t be a volume model, Porsche is hoping to use it to help grow the brand in general. Then again, even at $245,000 all 600 units of the GT2 RS sold out in just six months. And with the 918 Spyder to cost an incredible $845,000 there’s plenty of space left between the two cars for a new model.
As part of Porsche’s new product push, look for at least one new car per year, starting this Fall with the debut of the all-new 911, followed by the Cajun compact SUV next year.
