Volkswagen has confirmed that the drop-top variant of its popular Beetle will be released for sale in the early months of 2013.

We were originally expecting to see the convertible at the 2012 New York Auto Show, but it didn’t make an appearance, leading us to the conclusion that it will likely bow at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show. Despite the lack of appearance, we know what the car will look like thanks to spy shots of the convertible, which show the Beetle’s sportier styling and lower stance.

The car will be available with the same powertrain options offered on the standard Beetle, a 2.5-liter five-cylinder with a six-speed automatic, or a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder with a DSG six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The larger motor makes 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, while the smaller displacement turbo variant puts out 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. A diesel TDI version of the convertible will be available as well, outfitted with a 140-horse, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
