The newly redesigned Audi A3 debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and now we have spy photos of the S3 performance version out testing on the Nurburgring.

The pictures show us a stock looking A3, as Audi probably didn’t count on anyone noticing the quad tailpipes that tip off this prototype as the tuned up S3. The production version of this car will look more aggressive that its A3 counterpart, probably getting large air intakes, new front and rear bumpers and bigger wheels.

The S3 is expected to be powered by an all-new 2.0-liter four cylinder turbocharged engine that should make between 270 and 280 hp. The power will be transferred to the wheels through either a DSG seven-speed dual clutch or a six-speed manual gearbox. The S3 will also receive the Audi Quattro all wheel drive treatment.

Like all other major auto companies, the S3 was designed with its new lightweight material, so the new generation will be much lighter and will therefore handle better than its predecessor.

Audi announced that the A3 hatchback has been discontinued for North America, so odds are we will not see the S3 hatchback in North America either. But there is still hope that the A3 coupe will spawn an S3 coupe model, which should sell on our shores.
