2007 Honda Element EX.

Honda is recalling about 5,216 Element vehicles manufactured from 2007 through 2011 because of incorrect wiring that can cause trailer brake lights to function incorrectly.

The wire that sends power to the trailer turn signals was inadvertently switched with the wire that provides the brake light power. This causes the trailer’s turn signals to be non-functional, unless the brakes are applied in the vehicle. In a highway driving situation especially, when it is likely the brakes wouldn’t be touched, this will result in no turn signals, greatly increasing the risk of a collision.

Honda will contact affected owners and fix the flaw free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on September 20, 2012.
