Mercedes-Benz is hard at work on its GLA crossover model, previously known as the GLC. The compact SUV is aimed to compete against the BMW X1 and this is our first look at it.

The GLA will be built on the German automaker’s front-wheel drive architecture (MFA) that also underpins the A- and B-Class models. It is expected to arrive later on next year or early 2014 and currently looks to be on schedule, despite the heavily camouflaged vehicle seen in these spy shots.

Though it may be hard to see, the GLA’s body looks similar to the A-Class, and is definitely much less angular than the GLK.

With the A-Class set to his US dealers in 2014, look for the GLA to arrive after that, likely powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder making around 200 hp.
