Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a new concept car that hints at what its next-generation S-Class flagship sedan will look like, supposedly due out in early 2013.

The design study will be a physical version of the “Athletic S” sculpture (shown above) that premiered at the Paris Motor Show last month. Could the company be hinting at a Detroit Auto Show unveiling? NAIAS opens its doors to the press in the middle of January.

Mercedes’ design chief Gorden Wagener said the vehicle will combine new design elements with traditional ones, also saying the look will be “pure and timeless.” The next-generation Sonderklasse is expected to launch sometime next year.

As with all internet gossip take this rumor with a heaping helping of salt.
