Going punch-for-punch with rival BMW, Mercedes-Benz has put up its own incentives to protect its lead in the US luxury market.

BMW recently launched a promotion to waive payments on current lessees in hopes to drive up sales as 2012 comes to an end, Mercedes is now offering $5,000 in discounts to VIP customers in addition to letting some buyers skip as many as five payments.

Mercedes is currently holding a 5,221 unit lead against BMW through September and wants to close out the year strong in order to top BMW in sales. To answer BMW’s promotion of skipping up to three lease payments, Mercedes is letting owners of all models except the ML450 Hybrid to skip five payments to buy or lease any 2012 or 2013 model year vehicle.

As for VIP customers, the massive incentive deal is up to the discretion of the dealership’s general manager with cash offers for various models ranging from $750 for the C-Class and $2,250 for the E-Class to $3,000 for the GLK-Class and $3,275 for S-Class models. The $5,000 cash offer is reserved for the GL-Class SUV.
