As the world’s largest automobile market China will increasingly shape the direction of future vehicles. Indicating the preferences of its consumers the country’s top auto journalists have chosen the first ever China Car of the Year: the Mercedez-Benz S-Class.

Announced at an award ceremony at the Guangzhou Auto Show, China’s Chief Editors’ Club said, “there’s no other car like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class: it’s not only setting the benchmark for the industry, but it also embodies the peak of modern cars in this era.”

On hand to accept the award was Nicholas Speeks, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz China, commenting that, “the decision reaffirms the model’s stature and position in China, its top market worldwide.”

The S-Class won out over 54 other contenders for the 2014 China Car of the Year with the other two finalists being the Land Rover Range Rover and the Chang’an Ford Mondeo.
