McLaren is readying a new sports car based on the MP4-12C that will rival the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

The enhanced version of the 12C is rumored to launch this year and will use the same carbon fiber Monocell as the sports car it is based on. The powerplant will also be borrowed from the 12C, but will be modified to sport around 650 hp. Expect carbon-ceramic brakes and a host of other upgrades to make it a formidable opponent to the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Considering the new sports car will sit above the 12C in the British automaker’s lineup, expect its styling to be drastically different than the 12C while borrowing cues from the P1 supercar.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale features a high-revving V8 engine with 605 hp and accelerates to 62 mph in just three seconds.
