Just hours before its debut at the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan has revealed a teaser image of what could be the next-generation Frontier pickup. But the real news is what’s under the hood.

Posted to Facebook by Nissan PR boss Dan Bedore, he commented that the still under wraps pickup is “not exactly” the next Frontier, instead referring to it as a “technical study.”

And while the design remains somewhat of a thinly-veiled mystery, the real story will be the engine with Bedore commenting that, “What’s under the hood is intriguing…”

Past reports have indicated that a diesel Frontier could be a part of the plan. Nissan has already revealed that the next-generation Titan pickup will make use of a 5.0-liter V8 diesel engine provided by Cummins, while a 2.8-liter 4-cylinder is a possibility for the Frontier with around 200 hp and 380 b-ft of torque.

Look for full details with Nissan’s big announcement coming at 11:00 a.m. EST.
