Intakes, brakes, exhausts and a diffuser – these are the things we can see in these new spy photos of the upcoming Mercedes C63 AMG. But there’s a few interesting details about what we don’t see here too, namely the engine lurking under the hood.

Seen here testing well before its Paris Motor Show debut in October, the next generation C63 AMG is sure to be every bit as exciting and fast as the current model on sale, but power will come from a smaller 4.0-liter V8 engine. Fitted with two turbochargers, this car will make around 450 hp and closer to 500 when equipped with the AMG Performance package.

Despite that smaller engine, the car will still sport the C63 moniker, as AMG has deemed the name “too valuable.” It will face off against the upcoming 2015 BMW M3, which uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six that makes 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Of course, BMW will be offering its super-sports sedan with a manual transmission, a move we doubt Mercedes will follow. Instead expect a seven-speed transmission, although there’s no word if it will be a dual-clutch unit or a traditional auto.

When the new 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class was announced at the Detroit Auto Show, we learned of its weight loss due to aluminum structure, it should be reasonable to expect the upcoming AMG will also lose a few pounds.

Finally, it’s rumored that the 4.0-liter V8 used in the new C-Class AMG will also be used in the new AMG GT sports car. We recently saw the new AMG GT testing in the winter, so it makes sense that these two AMGs are sporting similar engines and testing at around the same times.
