The Mercedes-Benz S-Class currently offers an electrified plug-in hybrid powertrain, but sometime in the not so distant future it may take it to the next level.

At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the chief of Mercedes’ large car portfolio, Dr. Uwe Ernstberger, revealed to Top Gear that an all-electric S-Class is on its way, eventually. “A complete electric car will be done in the future,” he responded when asked about the S-Class EV.

While Ernstberger doesn’t think the car is currently a good fit, he has ideas for what would make it feasible, and it comes down to batteries. “We have to work on the capacities of the batteries to get a better package in the car,” Dr Ernstberger said. “Because you do not want to lose all the comfort features of an S-Class for transporting a battery only.”

Exactly when an all-electric S-Class will arrive is unclear, so for now, customers will have to make due with the plug-in hybrid variant.
