Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe Takes Pebble Beach [Bi]turbo Storm

Mixing the S-Class Coupe with the sort of V8 potency pumping out of AMG’s mad scientist laboratories is a great way to polish off fossil fuel, but what if the idea of eight cylinders seems pedestrian or even vulgar?

Believe it or not, that’s the case occasionally and also the reason Mercedes-Benz also offers a 12-cylinder version. Of course we’re talking about the new S65 AMG Coupe that made it online debut earlier this summer but is waltzing out in person here at the Monterey Car Week. As you might remember, the large two-door is powered by the brand’s 6.0-liter biturbo V12 engine producing a prodigious 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque sent through a seven-speed automatic transmission. That’s enough to tug the beastly barge to 60 mph in about four seconds or to a 186-mph top speed. Velocities like that in cars like this are probably best left to the brochure outside of the Autobahn, but that really isn’t the point. In this case, it’s all about having access to opulence, power and power in the smoothest fashion possible.

While such a smoking hot car would probably stop people in their tracks elsewhere, it seems almost commonplace at Monterey Car Week. But once the swarms Veyrons vanish, anyone who actually buys leases an S65 AMG will be treated to luxuries including the company’s Magic Body Control suspension, a Burmester stereo with 3D sound and yards of interior upholstery that you would expect to see wrapping fine furniture.

Pricing still hasn’t been announced for the new uber coupe, but Mercedes says it will start arriving in showrooms here late in the year.

For the headline to work, the "turbo" part of Biturbo should be in brackets. I've always heard the phrase "...takes [something] by storm," never "...takes [something] turbo storm."

Kinda hard to tell if the photo-shoot is a bad shot or not but by looking at the right rear of the tail-lights, they are not aligned.
