Lincoln MKS Flunks IIHS Crash Test, BMW 5 Series Isn't Much Better
A trio of luxury midsized sedans has been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the results are a mixed bag.
The BMW 5 Series, Infiniti Q70 and Lincoln MKS were introduced to IIHS’s small overlap front test for the first time with the Q70 achieving a good rating, the Lincoln MKS earning a poor rating and the BMW 5 Series getting a marginal rating. Out of seven large luxury cars tested by the agency for small overlap protection, the BMW 5 Series and Lincoln MKS are the worst performers.

The good rating for Infiniti’s sedan will apply to the 2014-2015 Q70 and the 2013 Infiniti M. With good ratings in the Institute’s four other crash tests and an available front prevention system, the Q70 qualifies for an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. As for the MKS, its poor rating applies to 2009-2015 models while the BMW 5 Series’ marginal rating will apply to 2011-2015 model years.
The Q70 is Nissan and Infiniti’s fourth model to earn either a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ for 2014. It is also the fifth large luxury car to qualify for the 2014 Top Safety Pick+ award, joining the Hyundai Genesis, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S80 and Acura RLX.
“The five manufacturers that have already achieved the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation for their cars are offering consumers state-of-the-art safety,” says IIHS President Adrian Lund. “Meanwhile, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Lexus and Lincoln are playing catch-up in the large luxury category.”
