NVIDIA Unveils Automotive Chipsets For In-Car Displays and Autonomous Driving

NVIDIA, a company that’s more commonly associated with home computing and smartphones, has big plans for the automotive industry that it is showcasing at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show.

With the unveil of the Drive CX digital cockpit computer, NVIDIA is claiming to have the most advanced computing platform in the automotive industry. With the ability to push out 16.6 million pixels, or about the equivalent of two 4K displays at once, it’s hard to argue with their claim.

At a press conference at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, the company gave a quick demonstration of Drive CX in action. Key to the technology was the rich digital dashboard with smooth animations and a high-tech navigation display. The display was even able to mimic the texture of other materials like carbon fiber, wood and aluminum.

Beyond the Drive CX digital cockpit computer, Nvidia also unveiled its Drive PX supercomputer chipset that will help provide processing power to all the cameras and sensors that are used in autonomous vehicles. It can process billions of pixels per second from up to 12 cameras.

Nvidia believes that the autonomous car will rely mostly on cameras and that the company’s expertise in graphics processing will help give it the edge in this field. The Drive PX chipset is able to quickly recognize items via camera including speed limits, ambulances, pedestrians, cyclists and street signs. This quick recognition is necessary to enable an autonomous car to act safely and appropriately.
