Volkswagen has announced the three-row version of the new Tiguan crossover will be made in Mexico.

The German automaker is investing $1 billion into its Puebla assembly plant as it gets ready to produce the three-row version of the Tiguan, which launches in 2017. The investment will expand and modernize the production facilities at the Puebla plant and will add tooling to produce certain auto parts.

Currently the Puebla plant produces the new Golf on the company’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform and expects to produce 500 Tiguan crossovers per day. The model will be sold to North and South America, Europe and China. With the investment, Volkswagen expects to add about 295,275 square feet to the facility.

“Localization has become key to safeguarding our competitive position on the global market and manufacturing the Tiguan in Mexico will bring production closer to the U.S.-market,” said Michael Horn, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “It is another proof point that Volkswagen is committed to further growth in the U.S. and North American markets. With production of the Golf A7 and the Tiguan now moved to Puebla, we will build approximately 90 percent of our products in the NAFTA region.”
