Porsche Pondering Boxster Spyder GT4

Porsche initially planned to let the Boxster Spyder act as a range-topper, but that might not be the case anymore.

Following especially strong demand for the Cayman GT4, Porsche’s executives are considering a GT4 version of the Boxster Spyder that it unveiled in New York earlier this month. The lightweight Boxster already uses the same 3.8-liter flat six in slightly de-tuned form making 375 hp compared to the Cayman’s 385.

The upgrade wouldn’t be a difficult one for Porsche to execute because it really only needs to borrow the Cayman GT4’s stuffer rear suspesnsion, adaptive front suspension and bigger brakes from the 911 GT3.

So far, the project is still waiting on a green light, but if it gets the official nod the official debut could take place during the Frankfurt Motor Show or possibly during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

Boxster Spyder GT4 and GT4RS make sense, but the regular Spyder's slightly detuned engine doesn't make sense anymore. It just opens the door to classic car problems down the line where the new owner of a Cayman GT4 "survivor" finds out the unscrupulous seller from Lawn Giland swapped out the 385HP engine for a 375HP Boxster Spyder engine back in 2025 or something...
