VW Could Become 2nd Largest Automaker in 2015

Volkswagen will at least be in second place for overall sales through the first quarter of 2015.

From January through March, the German automaker squeezed past General Motors for at least second place after selling 2.49 million vehicles from its family of automakers which includes Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat and Skoda. The Volkswagen Group’s sales are up 1.8 percent compared to a year ago, helping it edge our General Motors, which sold 2.42 million units across Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Holden, Opel, Vauxhall and other affiliates like Jiefang and Wuling. GM sales are up 1.9 percent compared to a year ago.

The world’s top-selling automaker for the last three years is Toyota and the Japanese automaker is expected to announce its first-quarter global sales next week. For now, Volkswagen will have to settle for at least second, but it is a possibility that it edged out Toyota through the first quarter of 2015.
