Next-Gen Porsche 911 Likely to Offer Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain
A plug-in hybrid Porsche 911 come become a reality by 2020.
The next-generation 911 model, internally called the 992, will be fully redesigned with the entire lineup powered by turbocharged flat-six cylinder engines. In addition, Porsche is most likely going to add a plug-in hybrid variant to the lineup according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. Not only will a plug-in hybrid 911 help cut fuel consumption and meet emissions standards, its performance could be enhanced similar to how the Porsche 918 Spyder takes advantage of an electrified powertrain.
What won’t change with the new 911 is the rear-engine layout, which has become a trademark to the nameplate. Four-cylinder engines are still a possibility for the 911 lineup, but are unlikely given how Porsche wants to further differentiate the 911 and Boxster/Cayman.

As for the current 991, our spy photographers have captured it testing numerous times now. The facelift will arrive later this year and the naturally-aspirated flat-six engines will be replaced by turbocharged powerplants.
Expect the next-generation 911 to launch in four to five years as the 991 facelift will give Porsche time to make some important decisions on the future of its sports car.
