The new high-performance Alfa Romeo Giulia will pack a massive performance punch, but base models will deliver an equal dose of value.

Making its North American debut at the LA Auto Show, the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio promises to embarrass it’s German competition, packing 80 more horsepower than a BMW M3 and lapping the Nurburgring 13 seconds faster than a Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

Priced in the $70,000 range it’s more affordable than one might guess, but the real value story is the rough pricing numbers announced for the base model. That car will go into production in the next six months said brand boss Reid Bigland, while indicating that it will be priced in the $40,000 range.

For that price owners will get a rear-wheel drive Italian sports sedan powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 276-hp. Alfa promises a 0-60 mph time of roughly 5.5 seconds. All-wheel drive will be available as an option.

For comparison’s sake, a BMW 328i starts at roughly $38,000 and makes 240-hp.

The headline grabber, however, will continue to be the high-performance Quadrifoglio model, making 505-hp and a top speed of 191 mph.
