Two Million Plug-In Cars Have Now Been Sold Globally
As of the end of 2016, the world has collectively purchased over 2 million plug-in electrified vehicles.
Specifically, at the end of December 2016, 2,032,000 plug-in vehicles of all kinds have been sold around the world. That includes some light plug-in vans sold in Europe, though it does not include heavy duty or other commercial plug-in electric vehicles, which would pump up the numbers even more.
That means that of the total 1.4 billion vehicles on the world’s roads, about 0.15 percent feature a plug-in of some kind. That is up from 0.10 percent in 2015, so while it is still a small percentage, the amount of plug-in vehicles around the world is growing. Going back to 2009, there were only 1,720 plug-in vehicles on the world’s roads.

In order, the top markets for plug-in vehicles are: China, Europa and the U.S. In 2016, China bought about 320,000 plug-in cars while Europe bought 212,000 and the U.S. bought 157,181.
