The third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS was introduced at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show.

Widely considered as the first “four-door coupe” that started the craze, the latest CLS builds on its previous success with evolutionary changes. Overall, the model is a bit more aggressive than its predecessor, while introducing Mercedes-Benz’s new design language that will eventually influence all other models in the German automaker’s lineup.

Under the hood is an all-new inline six-cylinder engine, a configuration Mercedes hasn’t used in decades. At its launch, it will only be available as a CLS450 and CLS450 4Matic, with the 3.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Accompanying the turbocharged engine is a new 48-volt electric starter/generator that contributes a 21-hp and 84 lb-ft of torque boost in short bursts.

Inside, the CLS seats five people for the first time, with the rear seat bench split 40/20/40. The model will be available with the company’s adaptive air suspension and is packed to the brim with high-tech features such as wireless smartphone charging, widescreen infotainment system, fully digital gauge display, car-to-x communication, massaging seats, and NFC pairing capability.

Expect pricing to be announced closer to the model’s launch in fall 2018.
