There may not be a next-generation Ford Fusion for the North American market.

According to a recent report, production of the Ford Fusion in North America is scheduled to end at the end of the decade and the American automaker may not replace the model. Ford has begun notifying suppliers it will not build the next-generation Fusion in Mexico, where the car is currently manufactured, and it’s unclear whether Ford will stop selling the Fusion in North America, replace it with a different vehicle, or build it elsewhere. One thing is for sure, Ford will not import the Fusion from China, where the company currently builds the Mondeo for the Chinese market. The European Mondeo is currently built in Spain.

In an emailed statement to Automotive News, Ford said, “We have no plans to export the next-generation Fusion/Mondeo from China to North America and Europe. Fusion/Mondeo are an important part of the Ford car lineup. We will have more information to share about the next Fusion/Mondeo at a later date.”

Ford executives have been suggesting the company’s sedan portfolio is due for a change, with plans of offering fewer car nameplates as the crossover and SUV segment continues to boom in North America. The company believes the shift from cars to crossovers and SUVs in America is permanent.

If the Ford Fusion does get the ax in North America, it could be one of the highest-volume cars to give way to the crossover and SUV segment.

Ford's CEO is a fool! There are Fusions galore on the road, and it's a great car! Instead of eliminating it, Ford should concentrate on a new model with hybrid high mileage battery. Many, many people want a full size SEDAN and they will just end up with a Chevy. Ford needs a CEO who is actually a "car man"! Does anyone remember Chainsaw Al who took Oster down, as well as several other companies?
