Don't Worry, Mercedes-AMG Will Never Make a Black Series SUV

Considering the depth of the AMG portfolio, it’s not ridiculous to assume that it may begin to expand its Black Series sub-brand – but Mercedes-Benz has no such plans.

Speaking to AutoGuide on the floor of the 2018 New York International Auto Show, AMG boss Tobias Moers said the Black Series brand will remain exclusive to two-door cars only. So while Jaguar Land Rover are speaking of a rollcage-equipped SUV ready to take on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, AMG is looking to keep its performance skunkworks focused on true track cars.

“No, no, no, no…never,” Moers responded with a laugh when asked about Black Series putting its badge on an SUV.
“Black Series is for the racetrack.”

It’s also unlikely that another C63 AMG Coupe will be coming to market. Moers said with the addition of the AMG GT to its lineup, there’s little sense in offering something like a C63 Black Series. The regular AMG GT would likely still be a lighter, better handling and more focused product than a new C63 Black Series, and would sell for a similarly high sum.

“Black Series is dedicated to two doors cars,” he said. “And you know with GT lineup, there’s no sense of a C-Class Coupe Black Series.”

So no SUV, and no new C63 AMG Black Series. What about that Black Series AMG GT we keep hearing so much about, Tobias?

“GT S Roadster is coming to the market now, and you know, we have in the past something called Black Series, so let’s wait and see.”

We imagine an AMG GT Black Series would have less weight, more downforce, stickier tires and, as a result, lower lap times. Prototypes for this mad creation have been spotted testing at the Nurburgring, so hopefully it’s not too much longer until we can bring you more information on the next iteration of Black Series.
