2019 Volvo S60 Arrives With Up To 415 HP, Starts at $36,795

Volvo had quite the day today, unveiling the brand new S60 sedan and welcoming journalists and dignitaries to its first ever American assembly plant.

The South Carolina plant’s workers obscured the car and were invited to say a few words about the plant and their home state before stepping out of the car’s way, one by one, to reveal the handsome new sedan.

Sharing Thor’s hammer headlights and an overall cleanliness of design with the rest of the lineup, the S60 is a handsome, if less than surprising, addition to the Volvo family of cars.

Built exclusively at the American plant, the S60 will be exported around world, even to Sweden. It may therefore surprise you to read that there will be no diesel engines at the plant, since the S60 will not be sold anywhere with one.

Only plug-in electric or otherwise electrified S60s will be sole, as per Volvo’s commitment, announced in 2017.

The engines available at launch will be the T5 and T6, with which we are now familiar, as well as the T6 plug-in hybrid making 340 combined hp, and the T8 plug-in, making 400 hp (or 415 hp if you opt for the Polestar Engineered option.)

Volvo is convinced that this won’t only be about power, though. The brand’s senior vice president for R&D promises an exciting drive that will be as quick through the corners as you could hope for.

“The active chassis and drive modes deliver excellent control and an engaged performance that makes this a driver’s car,” said Green. “It also brings the acclaimed technology from our 90 Series and other 60 Series cars into this segment, making it one of the best sports sedans on the market.”

Based on the SPA platform that underpins every 90 and 60 series Volvo, the ride should be familiar, albeit specially set up for duty here.

Safety, as you might expect, will be top notch, with “City Safety” and “Autobrake” tech both available. Together they will help drivers avoid crashes, and form the only safety suite that can recognize pedestrians, cyclists, and moose (or large animals or whatever).

An optional “Pilot Assist” system will also help take over some driving tasks for drivers, while “Run-off Road Mitigation,” “Oncoming Lane Mitigation” and other safety tricks will help the car steer clear of any accidents before its many crumple zones and airbags even have to help protect you from injury.

Starting at $36,795 (destination included) buyers will be able to spec their S60 all the way up to $56,395 if they opt for the T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid eAWD car in Inscription trim.

If they’d rather not deal with banks and loans, though, Volvo will be selling the car through its subscription service, Car by Volvo. Starting at $775/month for the T6 AWD Momentim trim, the T6 R-Design will cost $850/month, while Volvo has not yet revealed pricing for the Polestar Engineered T8 version.
