The Hyundai Ioniq 6 Is A Streamlined Take On Electric Sedans
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a sleek, streamlined sedan-bodied electric vehicle, and the newest addition to Hyundai’s lineup.
The latest entry in Hyundai’s fully electrified Ioniq lineup, the Ioniq 6 is a sedan-shaped car slotting in next to the hatchback (but technically SUV) Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 6 is a production version of the sleek Hyundai Prophecy concept from 2020. The design is clean, elegant shape, with rounded edges, paired with a rear end that’s reminiscent of a Saab crossed with the original Mercedes Benz CLS, with a bit of Citroen or Infiniti J30 thrown in for good measure. Hyundai says the design is inspired of old streamlined designs, in a style that Hyundai has dubbed Emotional Efficiency. The Ioniq 6’s smooth appearance is more than just styling, Hyundai claims a very slippery 0.21 drag coefficient for the electric sedan.
Inside, the Hyundai claims to have placed people, sustainability, and interior space at the front of the Ioniq 6’s design. The wheelbase is long, which should allow for generous room for all passengers. The dashboard’s twin-screen layout looks similar to the Ioniq 5, but a center console and dramatic interior lighting set the two cars apart. Also, the Ioniq 6’s dashboard has two mini-screens on either side, that are fed from the skinny, camera-only rearview mirrors. It’s unclear if the camera mirrors will make their way to the US and Canada, though. Hyundai claims a series of more environmentally friendly interior choices, like eco-process leather seats, recycled PET fabric seats, or bio-PET fabric in the vehicle’s headliner.
Underneath, the Ioniq 6 uses the same E-GMP platform utilized by the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Genesis GV60. Hyundai has been mum on the Ioniq 6’s release date, but we’d estimate it in showrooms sometime next year.
