CARB Filing Confirms 2025 Mazda CX-70 Will Have CX-90 Engines
Although we have speculated this would be the case, filings with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) indicate that the upcoming Mazda CX-70 will indeed share powertrains with the larger CX-90. The CX-90, Mazda’s full-size SUV, is powered by either a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six engine mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system, or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired to a plug-in hybrid system. Both units use an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The CX-70 is set to be a new two-row mid-sized SUV riding on a shortened version of the CX-90 platform. Rumor has it the latest Mazda will be even more luxurious than previous models, helping the brand to better compete with rivals like BMW and Mercedes.
The CARB filings show that two versions of a 3.3-liter engine will be used for the CX-70, both with hybrid technology. This aligns with the Mazda CX-90's high and low output 3.3-liter engines, although exact output in the CX-70 is unknown at this time. The third drivetrain listed is a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid, which once again lines up with the CX-90 PHEV.
Mazda’s CARB data shows that the three separate CX70 engine filings are listed with all-wheel drive, which will be included in all trim levels, and very likely as standard. Finally, the emissions data shows that the CX-70 has been listed as a 2025 model year car. We could be looking at a 2024 arrival for the new SUV.

Mazda has a perfectly great hybrid platform already ready for upgrade and redeployment to the world in the MX-30 PHEV. However they chose to pursue what American car companies choose to do and that is give people something they can't afford or want in the CX-90...That monstrosity won't make it to the dominant marketplace the MX-30 PHev would have as the 21st century heir apparent to their C-class vehicles already on the street everywhere. Simply put they were focused on the 1percenters instead of transitioning the Western global market to the EV environment. Someone in their enterprise got rich by precluding the affordable hybrid to the rest of the United States.
