If you care about driving but also want a mid-sized luxury SUV, the Porsche Cayenne is still top dog. Fun and satisfying from its humbler trims right through to the bonkers Turbo GT.

2024 Porsche Cayenne S and Cayenne Coupe Review

The whole Porsche Cayenne lineup saw substantial updates for this year, but for me, the focus is squarely on the mid-level Cayenne S.

Call it a return to form. The original Cayenne launched with a V8 in Cayenne S form, and for 2024, it’s back. Don’t get me wrong, the V6 models serve a purpose, especially when hooked up to Porsche’s plug-in hybrid setup. There’s just something intrinsically correct about an eight-cylinder Cayenne though, especially without the associated ballistics of the harder-faster-stronger Turbo.

Porsche obviously thought the upgrade was worth it, or else it wouldn’t have done it. We wanted to find out for ourselves, so managing editor Mike Schlee and I spent a week with both a Cayenne S and V6-powered Cayenne Coupé to figure it out.

3 Things We Like About the 2024 Porsche Cayenne Coupé and 2 We Do Not

Recently, we got to spend a week with the all-new 2024 Porsche Cayenne Coupé. Refreshed for this model year, we wanted to see how the entry-level model stacked up in the world of sport luxury SUVs as well as within the Porsche family itself.

In short, we were impressed overall, but no vehicle is perfect. Below we explore what we really like about the new 2024 Porsche Cayenne Coupé, and what we would like to change.

2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Review

Difficult as it may be to believe, Porsche’s first-ever utility is now more than 20 years old, and over the past two decades it has entrenched itself as one of the company’s bestsellers.

True, in some years the smaller Macan SUV may be the ultimate Porsche bestseller worldwide, but it is the Cayenne that has led the charge in transitioning Porsche from a pure sports car-only marque into one that with a more complete range of models.

The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Recalibrates the Performance SUV Benchmark

I didn’t want to like the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT.

It wasn’t some antiquated view that SUVs and performance don’t mix. That sort of Abe-Simpson-and-clouds mindset is futile: the market has shifted, and technology has evolved.

The thing is, Porsche has been leading that charge with the Cayenne for some two decades. What began as an ungainly high-rider with a 911 schnoz has matured into a satisfying family vehicle with class-leading dynamics. How could Porsche raise the bar the company itself set?

I got a taste of the answer last year, but a week with this beast confirmed it. The 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT goes harder, turns sharper, and sings stronger—yet with almost no trade-off in everyday usability.

2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Review: Less is More

Like the iconic 911, Porsche’s Cayenne comes in a dizzying amount of flavors.

This 2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid sits near the bottom of the range, closer to the base Cayenne than the range-topping Turbo GT, which boasts nearly double the horsepower of the entry model. What the E-Hybrid lacks in attention-grabbing (and wallet-draining) figures, it makes up for with a potent blend of performance, practicality, and surprising efficiency. In Coupe form, there’s even an extra dash of style—all at what can almost be described as good value, if you can exercise restraint with the options list.

The Porsche plug-in drivetrain saw an upgrade last year. The lithium-i0n battery pack has an improved net capacity, now up to 14.3 kWh. EV-only range creeps up a couple miles to 17 total (27 kilometers), with a combined range of around 430 miles (692 km). On its own, the electric motor produces 134 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It pairs to the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 found in the base Cayenne, which brings its own 335 hp and 331 lb-ft to the table. The wonders of power curves means combined outputs of 455 hp and 516 lb-ft.

2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT First Drive Review: Rocket ‘Yenne

A waterlogged Atlanta highway during rush hour is not an ideal test setting for a 631-horsepower uber-SUV.

That’s where I find myself, protected from the elements within the very red interior of the 2022 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. After a day of dissecting some fantastic rural roads in northern Georgia, in the latest 911 variant, two flavors of 2022 Macan, and the pared-back Cayman T, it was a calculated decision to end up in Porsche’s larger SUV. As the skies finally delivered on the day-long threat of rain, surely the Cayenne would make for a comfy, drama-free drive back to camp?

Yes and no. The range-topping Cayenne is very much about drama, the kind that dismantles your feeble preconceptions of things like “physics” or “sport utility vehicle.” The Turbo GT sharpens the edges of Porsche’s original SUV, yet keeps its abilities as a comfortable, cosseting everyday driver intact. Buyers will have to cough up quite a lot for it, but this is the driver’s choice trim of the driver’s choice SUV.
