In a report released today by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers of sport-utility vehicles, had the highest instances of death in crashes because of rollovers, however they are now those with the highest probability of survival.

In fact, drivers of Nissan’s 350Z sports car and the Titan pickup as well as GM’s Chevrolet Aveo and Cobalt compacts are the most prone to die in accidents than those driving other vehicles.

Of the 26 lowest-rated vehicles, none had standard electronic stability control, while all but one of the top-rated safest cars did, according to the report. The stability control/ traction control automatically applies the brake or reduces throttle when drivers over or under steer.

The safest vehicles included the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Toyota Sienna, Ford Edge, Nissan Armada, Range Rover Sport/ LR3.

Today’s analysis was based on data from 2006-2009, using fatality reporting from the NHTSA.
