Four Tuner Shops to Compete in EBay BUILT Web Series

Four different garages are being pitted head-to-head in an all-out tuning and customization contest with the biggest parts inventory in the world at their disposal: eBay Motors.

Broken into a 10-episode web series, each garage chose a vehicle that it is tuning to earn the right to be called “BUILT.” The cars have nothing in common and neither do the shops, with a 1968 Chevrolet van, 1966 Chevrolet El Camino, 1970 Jeep Grand Cherokee Commando and a 1984 Porsche 911 squaring off head-to-head.

Best of all, the competition isn’t decided by producers and a panel of auto experts. Instead, the decisions come down to the guys turning wrenches and spraying paint, as well as the car buffs that fuel them.

Those fans will be allowed to vote on their favorite build, deciding which garage will walk away with the title and bragging rights.

But there’s more than reputation at stake in the competition, which will conclude on August 27. All four cars will head from whence they came to be auctioned on eBay to raise money for a charity of each individual garage’s choice. And after that, the vehicles will ultimately go on display at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Tuning the Porsche is GSR Autosport — a group known for squeezing the most out of all motors European. The 911 they chose is as pristine as they come, but that won’t stop this eager tuning crowd from scrapping stock parts for new ones from eBay Motors. The only problem? They blew almost half their budget on the car alone.

That’s why Duran’s Quality Painting might have an advantage with its ’66 El Camino, which isn’t currently driveable. Still, that might actually save them some work in tearing all the old out to strap on the new — not to mention a comparatively massive parts budget on their side.

In terms of something new, Mackey’s Hot Rods plans to transform its ’68 Chevy van into an aircraft carrier. It’s a serious undertaking that will require commitment and a lot of original thought, but then again, what better to use than a big people carrier to build something creative?

Finally, Off Road Evolution will be reinvigorating a 1970 Jeep Grand Cherokee Commando with eBay-sourced rock crawler brawn, something that could yield impressive results given the shop’s track record and the truck’s potential.
