BMW is issuing a recall for certain model year 2009 through 2012 X5 xDrive 35d diesel vehicles, over concerns that the power steering may unexpectedly lose power.

The problem stems from an engine belt idler pulley bolt that can loosen, and eventually break over time. If the bolt does break, the power steering may be lost in the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 29,800 units in the U.S., and is expected to begin in January, 2013. BMW will contact affected owners, and replace the bolt free of charge. For more info, owners can call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
