The Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel is on its way to the U.S. and it will debut during the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

New for 2013, the Grand Cherokee is getting an eight-speed transmission and a diesel engine with 241 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Jeep has already had one oil burning engine under the hood of the Liberty, though that model didn’t live up to sales expectations.

Next year will mark the arrival of the Mazda6 diesel, Chevy Cruze diesel, and added diesel options from Audi and Volkswagen, signaling that the market may be more ready now for diesel models than it was when the liberty was on sale.

Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley says that the new Grand Cherokee diesel will impress buyers with improved driving dynamics and reduced noise, vibration and harshness.

The Grand Cherokee diesel is expected to be on sale by the first quarter of 2013.
