The upcoming Toyota Supra successor is on its way, and when it arrives, it may be powered by a turbo inline four-cylinder engine combined with a hybrid setup that is said to make 400 hp.

An insider whithin the company told Motor Trend that the new Supra will be the result of a tie up between BMW and Toyota, and will ride on a revised version of the GT 86 platform. The platform will be made stronger to better incorporate the added power of the new engine, though the body of the Supra will be larger than the GT 86.

For style, the Supra is supposed to adopt cues from the FT-HS concept (seen above) which debuted at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. That concept also used a mid-mounted 3.5 liter V6 engine, which remains a possibility for the Supra.

A Supra concept car is rumored to make an appearance at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, while the production car has a planned debut date of 2017.
