McLaren P13 to Make 450-HP

The three-member McLaren family will soon expand to four, with an “entry-level” sports car model set to directly take on the Porsche 911.

The newest member of the expanding McLaren lineup is expected to be called the P13 and sit just shy of the MP4-12C in the brand’s lineup. While the 12C is designed to challenge supercars like the Ferrari 458, the P13 will be more of a volume model and take on the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Engine output numbers won’t quite match up to the 911 Turbo, but don’t expect that to matter thanks to light weight technology and McLaren innovation. Look for the P13 to make use of the same turbocharged 3.8-liter engine as both the 12C and P1 but with output reduced to around 450 hp.

While that figure isn’t as high as the Porsche, the car is reported to weigh less than 3,200 lbs, or as much as 300 to 400 lbs less than a 911 Turbo thanks to its carbon fiber monocoque. Pricing will reportedly be targeted directly at the Porsche, though is expected to be slightly above the German sports car which starts at $148,300.

Perhaps most surprising is news that McLaren intends to borrow styling cues from the P1 rather than the 12C, an indication that the 12C’s styling is seen as too tame.

It's not always about engine numbers. Power to weight ratio is also key. Put a 70 hp BMW bike on a drag race with a, say, Corolla, for example....

the design of the MP4/12 is better than the P1's one, which is a little ugly....so styling cues should be from the first one.
