There was a key piece of information missing when AutoGuide took its first drive of Mercedes new CLA 45 AMG: its estimated gas mileage.

It’s a key figure for more than one reason. Of course, potential buyers will probably weight that among the reasons to buy not to buy, but this is also the smallest AMG model and Mercedes’ first front-wheel drive based performance car. The base CLA 250 is rated by the EPA to offer 26 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway, which further underscores how impressive the 23/31 figure is.

Sandwich that with the fact that this car packs the most power-dense production four cylinder you can buy today, and the notion that either the city or highway figure are possible is impressive; if it’s really possible during real-world driving.

Good gas mileage probably isn’t a top priority for someone willing to spend around $50,000 on a performance car, but if those figures prove to be realistic it could be another selling point in what’s already shaping up to be a stupendous package for Mercedes. Until the S3 arrives for the 2015 model year, Mercedes will essentially be left answered in the new segment.
