LG Electronics is set to enter the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) charger market in 2024, introducing its first line of AC and DC powered EV charging stations. Nicolas Min, Senior Vice President of LG Business Solutions USA, announced that the lineup will feature Level 2 and Level 3 EV chargers. This move aims to support the electrification of America by enabling businesses, municipalities, and other public spaces to independently own and operate charging stations.

Min emphasized LG's commitment to contributing to the U.S. commercial sector's development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This initiative is seen as vital for the industry's success and aligns with the nation’s clean energy objectives. LG's product roadmap is designed to be adaptable, catering to various use cases and supporting the increasing demand and popularity of electric vehicles.

Recognizing the need for a substantial increase in Level 2 and Level 3 chargers to support the growing number of EVs, LG intends to facilitate businesses in entering the market without depending on third-party operators. This approach will allow different entities such as hotels, restaurants, transit hubs, and municipal buildings to own and manage their EV charging stations, setting their own rates and meeting local demands.

LG's initial offerings in the U.S. will include Level 2 AC Chargers equipped with a load management solution and adjustable current settings, providing up to 11kW of output power through a standard SAE J1772 connector. These chargers are designed for simple wall mounting, with an optional stand for flexible placement. Additionally, LG plans to launch a Level 3 DC Charger in the next year, offering fast charging up to 175kW through CCS1 and NACS connectors. This model will feature a large outdoor LCD touch-screen display for various functionalities.

Citing research from Goldman Sachs and IHS Global Insight, Min highlighted the projected increase in EV sales in the U.S., expected to rise significantly by 2030. This anticipated growth underscores the urgency and collective responsibility in supporting EV infrastructure development. LG aims to foster competition and innovation in the market, ultimately benefiting drivers, businesses, and society.

LG’s entry into the EV charger market is part of a broader electrification strategy, including a suite of sustainable energy products for homes and buildings. These products range from HVAC systems to smart appliances, all aligning with energy-saving and environmental protection goals. Additionally, LG's ThinQ Energy platform offers users control over their home's energy usage.

Complementing this initiative, LG Energy Solution, a sister company of LG Electronics, leads in EV battery production and is investing heavily in U.S. manufacturing. LG Electronics will also leverage its nationwide network of sales, customer support, and technical maintenance professionals to provide a competitive edge and assurance to buyers investing in privately-owned charging infrastructure.

The upcoming LG chargers will integrate with other LG infrastructure elements through trusted LG software, and some models may offer revenue opportunities through digital displays for third-party advertisements.
