Porsche is going to sell its new Macan compact crossover with a base four-cylinder engine option, which will be available by the end of 2014.

“I can’t tell you the exact month, but sometime in 2014, perhaps at the end,” said Dr Thomas Casper, manager of transmission and drivetrain development, when asked about the four-cylinder Macan.

The engine will be a gas-powered turbocharged unit that uses horizontally opposed pistons, better known as a boxer engine. Power numbers are unknown, but the new four-cylinder will definitely make less than the 340 hp produced by the base V6.

Casper says that the engine note for the four cylinder is very important to the brand, and promised that this Macan will still be a “true Porsche.” This new four-cylinder is also expected to eventually find its way into the Boxter and Cayman as well, offering a new budget option from the brand.

Regional availability of the four-cylinder Porsche Macan is still unknown, though it does not seem likely for the US market.
