Lexus wants to become less dependent on the North American market for its sales and that could mean a smaller lineup.

Most recently, the Japanese automaker added the new NX crossover, but the company is considering an even smaller crossover. According to the brand’s European vice president, Alain Uyttenhoven, the launch of a small SUV is “not impossible” for Lexus and even “made sense” for the brand. He wouldn’t confirm that a model is being developed.

Currently the North American market accounts for nearly half of the company’s total annual sales. But tastes in the European, Chinese and Japanese markets will likely result in the development of smaller models, such as one that would slot under the new NX. Uyttenhoven said rouhgly 60 percent of the premium vehicles sold in Europe retail below $54,000 and that he believes the premium market starts with the compact Audi A1.
