Audi R8 Competition Marks the End of an Era

Audi is bidding a fond farewell to the first-generation R8 with one last special edition, revealed at the 2014 LA Auto Show.

The R8 Competition is capable of 3.2-second sprints to 60 mph from a standstill thanks to its 570-hp 5.2-liter V10 mated exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That V10 is the same engine that is used by the Audi R8 LMS race car which has won both the Daytona and Nuerburgring 24-hour races.

It’s not just the race car engine that makes this car special though. The R8 competition is fit with a host of matte carbon fiber bits, using the lightweight material to keep the car light and to provide additional downforce. The rear spoiler, mirror housings, side blades, front splitter and rear diffuser are all made from carbon fiber, while carbon ceramic brakes can be found inside massive 305 cross-section tires.

Moving inside, customers will find more carbon fiber trim pieces and and illuminted R8 competition door sill inlay.

Only 60 R8 Competition units will be built in total, so this will be a rare car to catch a glimpse of. Deliveries will begin in early 2015.
